Days 9 –10

August 25–26, 2010

Today we traveled from Medicine Hat, AB to Regina, SK. Regina is the Provincial Capitol of Saskatchewan. We traveled through mile after mile of prairie and farm land. As it was a long travel day, we just kicked back and relaxed after setting up camp.
On Thursday, we went into the city. Our first stop was Wascana Park. This ia a huge, beautiful park, where the Provincial Legislature, University of Regina, Royal museum, Science Centre, and the Queen Elizabeth Gardens are located. In the Gardens, is a statue of Queen Elizabeth II on her favorite horse. The real horse was presented to the Queen by the RCMP. There are also walking, jogging, & bike paths throughout the park. While we were there, there was a kayaking regatta going on. We watched some of the races. After leaving the park, we toured the rest of the city.

Day 8

Medicine Hat, AB

We started up this morning from Shelby, MT. It was a cool morning. First time this trip that we had to turn on the heater to warm up the motorhome. We topped of our fuel tank in Shelby, hoping to minimize fuel cost in Canada. From Shelby north was just open Prarie land with just a couple of small settlements. We crossed the border at Sweetgrass, MT. The border crossing was about the easiest that I can remember going into Canada. Once we were in Canada, we traveled through farm land, all the way to Medicine Hat. After we got settled in Medicine Hat, we went into town to find a bank to get Canadian Currency, To our surprise, the exchange rate is about 4 1/2 cents per dollar in our favor. Tomorrow, we head for Regina, SK.

Day 7

Shelby, MT

After some overnight rain in Helena, MT, we headed north to Shelby, Mt. Shelby is a small town about 30 miles south of the Canadian Border. We had a smooth trip. The first part was throufh the forest north of Helena. Lots of trees, streams, and rivers. We followed the Missouri River for the better part of that trip, losing it just South of Great Falls, MT. The attached photo, is the Missouri at Craig, MT. The Missouri's head waters are just north of I-90, and east of Butte, MT. It meanders north through the mountains, then turns east at Great Falls, into North Dakota before heading South East and meeting up with the Mississippi. Most of the day, we had left over clouds from the night before storms, and the weather was cool. As we approached Shelby, we saw more of the sun and it was quite windy. Fortunately, the wind died in the evening, so we didn't have to try to sleep with the motorhome rocking and rolling.

We had on & off rain for the first half of the trip, then it was mostly cloudy with scattered sun. Temperature dropped to the high 50's. Wearrived in Helena about 2:30 PM and took in the city, including the Montana State Capitol. As I write this, we are experiancing rain & thunder

Day 5

Idaho Falls, ID

We had another uneventful travel day, from Salt Lake City to Idaho Falls, ID. We took a short tour of the city. The attached photo is a 360 deg sculpture in the center of a round-a-bout in town. Note the two eaglets in the nest on the top right and the Mountain Lion below the nest. We also saw the Snake River that flows through the middle of town. They had a rainstorm that broke several records. More rain in 15 minutes than is normal for the month of August. There was flooding in several areas around the city and surrounding areas. During the storm, the temperature dropped to the low 60's & high 50's. It was 97 deg yesterday and supposed to be 97 deg tomorrow. Day 1 Aug. 17, 2010

Well, we are on our way. We made it to St. George, UT. Pretty uneventful, except for a single car rollover on I-15 between Barstow & Baker. Got bogged down in traffic. As both lanes were involved, we had to navigate around the accident through the center median. It was 106 deg. in Las Vegas. Went up to 112 deg. just before the Virgin River Gorge. Dropped to 111 deg. on arrival in St. George. As I write this is, it is still 102 deg. at 9 PM. Tomorrow we will head for Salt Lake City.
